<title>WYWS Newsletter: Jan, Feb, March 2006</title>
  <link>http://www.wyomingwatercolorsociety.org/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=7</link>
  <description>Happy New Year!
Hope you all are experiencing a great beginning to another promising year. This one is indeed promising for our Society. We will once again host here in Sheridan a state wide members only small painting show and sale in June. Look for details about show requirements in this newsletter. Last year we had quite a few visitors to the show and some sales too.
We also have an exciting workshop opportunity coming in September with William Herring. Although he isn&#039;t on the internet, and his publications are currently out of print, those that have taken workshops with him speak quite enthusiastically about his impact on their art, and their way of looking at the world around them. Plan now to join us September 11 - 15 in Sheridan. We are discussing possible discount rates with the local hotels, so get your reservations for the workshop in now and plan on having a fun and educational week with us.
Of course our National Exhibition is coming up as well. You&#039;ll find the prospectus attached to this newsletter. Look over it carefully and begin working on your masterpiece.
Each year this show has gotten bigger and bigger, and last year we had quite a few sales.
We are working to involve businesses from throughout our state through prize sponsorships, so our award monies will be bigger than ever too. If you know of a business in your area that would like the opportunity to get involved, please contact Julia George to get more details.
This year&#039;s two main fundraisers look to be great fun as well. We are going to do our second annual Members Painting Book, which was a huge hit last year. Please start working now on the piece you&#039;d like to contribute to the book, and start working on selling those raffle tickets too! The other fundraiser this year, based on feedback from members last year, will be the sales of WyWS shirts. Pictures of men&#039;s and women&#039;s styles are included in the newsletter, and the logo created last year by Misty Plott will be used again this year. Thanks Misty for your generous contribution of the copyright of the design! If we can get an order of at least 36 shirts, the prices will be much cheaper--a mere $32 for sizes XS - XL. These are fashionable, high quality shirts. Notice the men&#039;s style has a front pocket, so the logo will be on the pocket. On the women&#039;s style it will be in the same general location as on the men&#039;s.
Remember that our main source of revenue is these two fundraisers and our membership dues. (In the past any money from the workshop and show has allowed us to break even in those events.) Your efforts to make these fundraisers successful are important to keeping the WyWS vital.
I am looking forward to seeing the great works created by you for the rafflebook and for the two shows. If you have any questions about submission requirements, make sure to contact me. Happy Painting! .........Julia George

Wyoming Watercolor Society Small Painting Show and Sale Prospectus June 1-30, 2006
Although this is a non-juried show open to members only, we want to make sure there is some consistency in the work submitted. The following guidelines will assure a quality show and sale for all participants.

--Artist may submit a maximum of three paintings. There is a $5.00 fee per painting, payable to WyWS, to help defray show costs.

--Paintings may be created with any waterbased media, but must be all original work.

--Maximum framed size of the work is to be NO LARGER than 11x14 or 14x11 inches, and ready to hang with screw eyes and wire in place. You may use glass or Plexiglas, but mail at your own risk.

--Artist is responsible for shipping cost both ways, and must send in an appropriate reusable shipping container. A prepaid return shipping label must be enclosed. Artist may bring artwork in person if desired. WyWS is not responsible for any damage.

--The hosting gallery will keep 25% of any sales.

Watercolor Raffle Book 2006
Our first Watercolor Raffle book was a beautiful item and had wonderful work from our members. We are going to create another one as one of our 2006 fundraisers. The more of our members that submit a painting, the more desirable the book will be when we raffle it off during our fall William Herring Workshop. Our goal this year is to have the book completed in time to place images on the web site (to assit with sales), as well as create a calendar from quality photocopies of the submissions. We will raffle the originals in the book format and will also sell the photocopy calendars. Please start working on the image you would like to contribute to this wonderful fundraising project. The guidelines for the submitted paintings are as follows:

-140 lb or heaver watercolor paper
-the full page will be 12x12
-the painted image will be centered in the 12x12 page with a clean white 1 1/2 inch border
-send the original painting, and a short bio about yourself on a separate piece of 8 1/2 x 11 copier paper
-send the signed release for using the art in WyWS calendars

Wyoming Watercolor Society Presents a workshop with
William Herring September 11-15 Sheridan, Wyoming
What William Herring hopes to accomplish…
&quot;It is my desire to serve the aspiration of individuals by listening to their goals and helping them see how to get there. Included in the mix is a daily painting session on my part followed up in the afternoon by being there while each person attempts the experiments that match their daily ambitions. In particular, I will be painting in open, and not local color, and will aim to put into practice in my work a mutual ballet between line and color. Impressionists generally ignore line, but expressionists such as Van Gogh, Baugin and Hautree did not. I will focus, therefore, on drawing. That discipline requires that the aspiring artist abandon the use of erasers and even the very word &quot;sketch&quot;. I also seek to teach individuals to compose for beauty alone---abandoning the need for such things as a focal point and a center of interest. In addition to encouraging each artist to show me actual recent work so as to discover keys to their natural bents, I will end the week&#039;s schedule with prescriptive advice for each person. I seek also, sometime during the week, to cover the principles of marketing that will aid each artist in selling what they make.&quot;

  <description>Latest News from Annual Meeting
The WYWS members held their annual business meeting on October 5th during the lunch break from the Judy Morris Workshop. New officers were elected, recognition was given for the extremely fine work the exiting officers did to put on this year&#039;s workshop, and discussion was held about the exciting success of the fundraisers that were done this past year. If you want a copy of the minutes, please contact Julia George, who can e-mail or &quot;snail mail&quot; members a copy. Highlights of the well attended business meeting are as follows:
Pat Rucker, past president of the Colorado Watercolor Society and current member of both CWS and WYWS shared some great ideas from the CWS, including costs they have incurred and ways they have raised funds. CWS is a member of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, which is something we may want to consider in the future.
Member Amy Everhart from Diamondville, Wy shared that her husband Ryan developed, free of charge, a web site for the WYWS. It is up and running, and Ryan will help us maintain it free for the first year. The address is: www.wyomingwatercolorsociety.org.
New officers were presented and elected. They are as follows: President--Julia George 1st Vice President--open 2nd Vice President/Secretary--Linda Davis Treasurer--Lynn Skaggs (all of Sheridan) Representatives are: SE region--Ginnie Madsen (Laramie) SW region: Amy Everhart (Diamondville) NE region--Helen Campbell (Sheridan) NW region--open.
Motions made and passed: ** In regards to the annual exhibition, an additional charge, as determined by the officers, will be added for the unpacking, hanging, and repacking of the paintings accepted into the show. The specific amount will be included on the prospectus. **In regards to our annual National Exhibition, no paintings using &quot;water based oils&quot; will be accepted. **Accepted paintings must be shipped to the show, must match the submitted and accepted slide, must be for sale during the length of the show, and meet all expectations outlined in the prospectus, otherwise the artist will be disqualified from participating in the WYWS Annual National Exhibition for three
consecutive years. **Current by-laws state paintings will be executed on watercolor paper. The by-laws will remain as stated, therefore excluding watercolor canvas.

Our first Watercolor Raffle book was a great success. We sold around 350 tickets, and everyone was very hopeful to be the winner of such a beautiful collection of original art. The lucky winner was Lynne Skaggs of Sheridan, Wyoming. I&#039;m sure that next year we will have even more contributions of lovely art, and even more excited and hopeful people willing to buy tickets. Details about preparing your piece are in this newsletter, so start creating now, and lets have another great book to help raise funds for next year.

The 20th Annual National Exhibition has been a great success. There were 85
paintings representing 65 artists from across the United States. The opening reception at
the Bella Gallery in Sheridan, on October 5th, was well attended, with over 190 guests
visitng the show so far this month. The show was a wonderful exhibit of the variety of
beautiful work that represents watercolor.

Workshop News--If you missed our most recent workshop, you missed a really great time! Judy Morris was the instructor from Oct 3 - 7 and everyone that attended enjoyed themselves. We held the workshop in the Sheridan Artists&#039; Guild, Et.al room and had plenty of space to spread out. The weather caused some excitement one morning (no electricity at some of the hotels) but we were able to keep on learning and painting. I hope you&#039;ll consider attending next year&#039;s workshop, which will be in Sheridan September 11 - 15. William Herring will be our instructor and his style is very
different from Mrs Morris&#039;s so it will be a fun and exciting challenge to stretch our artistic selves in new directions. Keep your eyes open for details and start saving up for next year&#039;s fall workshop!

WYWS FUNDRAISER WATERCOLOR RAFFLE BOOK

STEPS IN PRODUCTION FOR YOUR PAGE IN THE WYOMING WATERCOLOR BOOK:

1.Cut a piece of 140-200 lb press watercolor paper into a 10 x 14 sheet.
2.Measure a 9x7 image size that will fit horizontally on the page with a border of 1-½ inches on 3 sides and a 3-½ inch border on the left side. SEE DIAGRAM.
3.Paint in the 9x7 image area only. This is so we have uniform “mats” of white border around each painting.
4.When you are finished with your painting please take it to a color copier and have them make an 8 1/2 x 11 color copy on card stock. (This will be used to show the book so the originals are not handled)
5. Write the title on the bottom edge of the color copy and show an H or a V for horizontal or vertical. DO NOT WRITE ON THE ORIGINAL PAINTING. (Except for your signature on the painting!)
6. On a separate piece of regular notebook paper write a 2-3-line statement about your painting along with the title of the artwork.
7. Mail the original painting, the color copy and the statement about your work. Please mail all between two stiff sheets of cardboard or mat board so it arrives in a flat condition.
We will make an index with the titles and artists information in the front of the book. Questions? Call Misty 307 672-0124
Recap:
Total paper size 10&quot; x 14&quot;. 1 ½” margin on top, right side and bottom. 3 ½ “ margin on left side for binding. Use right side as the bottom for vertical paintings.
This book of artwork will be put into a notebook and raffled off at the yearly workshop. You will not need to be present to win. Raffle tickets are included in this newsletter. We are asking you to start painting for this fun project. Imagine winning a notebook of miniature paintings by your fellow WYWS members. You can keep the book intact or frame your favorites. You could give some as gifts! Use your imagination. New Business:
Here’s your chance!!! I am still seeking our members who would like to take an active role in continuing the work of our WYWS. I am looking for people who are interested in serving as officers during the 2006-2007 years---and it’s really not that hard, since we have had great leaders before us that have laid all the groundwork. I haven’t gotten to know most of you yet (looking forward to doing so at the October Workshop and Show) so I don’t know your strengths. But if you are good at helping to keep the finances, or have ideas on getting the newsletter out to others, or ways to support our members and expand the membership, then volunteering as an officer of the WYWS is where you are needed. Although I will be serving as president here in Sheridan, I am happy to work with others from other communities if you are willing to use email, phones, and such to keep in touch with each other and me. Since this is my first recruitment effort, all three other offices are still available, so make sure to contact me or any of our current officers if you are interested (or want to recommend someone else!). Thanks. And happy painting! Julia George. V.P.

DEADLINE JULY 1, 2005: (Last Notice!)

WYWS FUNDRAISER WATERCOLOR RAFFLE BOOK
Post this page to your watercolor work area!

Those of you with computers can look at some of the paintings in the Montana Watercolor Society book by going to: www.montanawatercolorsociety.org Raffle book 2003. Keep painting!

Letter from a past president: Food for thought. Do you realize how close we are to losing our WYWS? We’re finally, thanks to officers willing to take time to improve our organization, getting to be a “force to be reckoned with”, with increased prizes for the BIG SHOW and attention of the art world resulting in bigger and better shows---and then shall we fizzle out??? Don’t any of you care to step forward?
I realize this is a small state and we have distance to consider, there are fewer of us to share the workload. Our dues are still small and all prices for services are skyrocketing. We need more in-state members! Lots of you have given of your time but it takes a whole team to play a good game. Shouldn’t we be proud of our artists, keep working together to get new, younger members to carry our organization? Or should we just grumble and quit. Think about it! B.J.Durr

Regional News:
SE BJ Durr-Wheatland has a new studio gallery, which opened Jan 29th, 05 at 75-14th St, Wheatland, WY. (307) 322-2117. She participated in the last WYWS regional show in Laramie, which resulted in a show through Feb at Wild Wind Gallery, Laramie. She had work showing at DeSelms Gallery, Cheyenne Mar 5th, 05. B.J. was also accepted into the Western Spirit Show opening Mar 5th at the Old West Museum in Cheyenne. She is finishing a wall mural near Connifer CO.

John Brasaemle was accepted in the Colorado Watercolor Society Show April 29 - May 9. This gives him signature status. He was accepted in &quot;Animal in Art&quot; at LSU and accepted in Western Colorado Watercolor Society Show.
Jeanie Schlump was awarded &quot;Best of Show&quot; at the Western Spirit Show in Cheyenne last month. Other members in the show were, Lenore Diem, and Joanne Ramsey.

New Business:
Here’s your chance!!! Now is your opportunity to take an active role in continuing the work of our WYWS. V.P.

A Backward Glance:
As your treasurer for the last two years, I’d like to say “Thank You” to each of you. It’s because of you that this organization is successful. In September of 2004, you each received a statement for dues. Some of you expressed concern about this statement and there is a reason for the reminder. Expenses for WYWS keep rising and it’s important that your officers know, at the start of the fiscal year in September, how much money they have to work with so they can plan the convention/workshop and newsletters. Your prompt response enables us to do this. It is very easy to let dues slide for a few months so I hope you will view the “reminder” this coming September as just a jog for your memory that dues are due. Thanks, Paulette Kucera, Treas.

It was a privilege to serve as Sec. of WYWS for the past two years. I have seen many changes since first serving as your President in 93-95. We have come a long way in a decade. I hope that the membership will continue to support this wonderful organization and its&#039; endeavors with their support and enthusiasm. Dani Reel 2ndVP/Sec

This is the last newsletter for the present officers. I want to thank officers Dani, Paulette, Julia, and the regional reps., Ann, Linda, Angie and Virginia for all their help during my 2 years as president of WYWS. Dani and Paulette had already served as officers in past years. I really appreciated their desire to step forward again and weather some changes in our organization. It has been very helpful to me to have their years of experience to refer to. Also thanks to past officers, B.J. and Beverly for continuing to stand by me while candidates for the presidency dwindled before our eyes. Thanks to you, the members that believe in WYWS for continuing to support the yearly shows and workshop. We exist because each one of you plays a part in making up Watercolor in Wyoming! It has been a pleasure to serve you. Misty Plott, Pres.
